American Journal: A former Magic starter was involved in illegal investments and leaked that the team’s core players were resting
6686 Sports, November 16th, TA reporters Sam Amick, Joe Vardon, and Mike Vorkunov jointly issued an article today, reporting on the latest developments in the NBA's illegal investment competition.
According to reports by the three of them, the federal charges also mentioned illegal investments in other team competitions, including the Orlando Magic. The government alleges that a Magic "regular starter" told others that the team planned to rest the starting core players in an April 2023 game against the Cavaliers, and this information was later sold to others to participate in an illegal investment competition.
A league source said the Magic have not been contacted by the Justice Department and the player is no longer with the team. When the Magic made the accusation public in October, they issued a statement stating that the player involved was no longer with the team, and the statement had been approved by the NBA before being released.
League sources said that the NBA is accelerating a major reform of the player injury declaration system as a follow-up measure to the illegal investment competition scandal. In theory, the incidents involving the Lakers, Magic and Trail Blazers might have been prevented if public information was more stringent about when players must be placed on the injured list.
